Course Description

​The course introduces students to the joys and challenges of reading short German fictional and non-fictional texts of various genres and centuries. We will read slowly and with an eye to grammar and vocabulary building, while also concentrating on developing an understanding of German cultural history through themes such as current news, youth in Germany, dating life, dialects, Heimat, and dreams. Texts and class discussions will be in German. Prerequisites: German 204 or equivalent.
 
6 credit, Literary/Artistic Analysis, International Studies, ​fulfills requirements for the German major and minor.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
After this class, you will have increased decoding skills (reading words accurately and fluently), increased knowledge in several domains (vocabulary, linguistic structure, and discourse as well as world knowledge), and increased cognitive processing capacities (memory for text, accessing relevant background knowledge, drawing justified inferences). You will have worked with dialects and deepened your understanding of specific grammar issues.
